The link between a Caithness bog and The Great Escape- and the two men who uncovered it 30/07/2021, 6:00 am Norwegian WW2 pilot Jens Müller, who crashed his Hurricane into a Caithness bog during training, and less than three years later became one of only three POWs to escape from Stalg Luft II successfully On August 27 1941, sixteen Hurricane pilots from 331 Squadron were training in the skies above Caithness. They were practising flying in V formation, but as they attempted a 180 degree turn to the right, something went badly wrong. Two aircraft collided, one went headfirst into the peat and burst into flames, while the other managed to limp back to base at RAF Castletown.
