Irish Rail set to submit application for a new bridge at a notorious Mayo crossing Published: Tuesday, 13 April 2021 09:44 Irish Rail has all its documents compiled to submit an application for a new bridge at the notorious manual railway crossing at Kilnageer, outside Castlebar, and it’s expected the company will make the application shortly.   That was confirmed by Mayo County Council Engineer Ann Sweeney at a recent meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.     Local councillor Cyril Burke says its welcome news that the company appears to be almost ready to proceed with the planning application that will be submitted to Mayo County Council.

Fine Gael councillor Cyril Burke raised his concerns over the situation at the recent monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District. He began by pointing out that HSE issues were not directly related to Municipal District meetings, but he said he had to highlight the concerns and experiences that people had highlighted to him over recent days. He described elderly patients presenting at the ED of the hospital in the afternoon and not being discharged until the early hours of the morning.

Bat species may prove crucial to secure funding for Moorehall restoration The lesser horseshoe bat looks set to be crucial to secure funding for an ambitious plan to develop Moorehall and its environs. A Master Plan for the development of the extensive area, located about 20 km from Castlebar, has now been completed and was presented to councillors at this week’s monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District. The development has huge potential for county Mayo and is jointly supported by Mayo County Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Coillte. The intention is to develop a national nature reserve, where the lesser horseshoe bat can be preserved and studied, while celebrating the cultural legacy of the Moore family, and creating recreational and visitor experiences.
