Hotspots like Alberobello, a Unesco-listed settlement of trulli and Lecce, dubbed Florence of the South for its Baroque architecture (now written off as tourist traps by snobs), of course rose even more in popularity and yet despite a growing fame across the board there was still this underrated, off-grid feel. Puglia still felt very much like an “if you know, you know” kind of place.
Alberobello is the famous town of trulli
It was only a matter of time before large premier hotel groups like the Four Seasons would set their sights on the destination, and their Puglian debut will mark the region’s first large-scale luxury hotel. I can t pretend my heart didn t sink a little when I saw the news. What will happen to this precious place I am so attached to? Mafia boss linked to escaped panther in Puglia thetimes.co.uk - get the latest breaking news, showbiz & celebrity photos, sport news & rumours, viral videos and top stories from thetimes.co.uk Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday newspapers.
Authorities are on the hunt for a black panther after locals reported seeing the big cat on the loose on the outskirts of a city in southern Italy.
The animal, which has been sighted in recent weeks in the countryside outside Bari, may have escaped from the villa of a mafia boss, according to local media reports.
Locals have even suggested the owner could have been influenced by the Italian crime series Gomorrah, which features a Naples gangster who keeps a panther as a pet.
Images and video purportedly showing the escaped panther were taken by local residents and have been shared on social media.
