Anjali Deswal was killed a month ago for marrying a man who belonged to a different caste from the same village. Nearly six earlier, another young woman who lived two lanes away from Anjali was strangled for being in a relationship with a man from a nearby village
Anushya, a Dalit woman, was attacked by her husband’s father Dhandapani, a member of the Shanar community (OBC), on April 14. Her husband Subhash and his grandmother Kannamma were killed in the attack.
Subhash (22), a man from the Shanar (also known as Nadar) community, had married Anushya on March 31 despite his father’s opposition because Anushya is a Dalit woman.
The accused in the case, Dhandapani, who allegedly fled the spot after murdering his son and own mother because his son married a Dalit woman, was arrested at the Uthangarai Government Hospital on the night of April 15.
