Black River FFA poultry team competes in virtual judging competitions
Ashland Times Gazette
This season the Black River FFA poultry judging team had the opportunity to participate in two virtual judging competitions.
The poultry evaluation career development event encourages learning through activities relative to production and management, processing, marketing and food safety and quality of poultry and poultry products.
Students will complete a comprehensive exam, select live meat-type chickens for broiler breeding, evaluate and place live egg-type hens and rate the finished product by evaluating and grading ready-to-cook carcasses and parts of chickens and turkeys.
This was Black River’s first year participating in the event. In the James Madison invitational, the team earned 20th place. Out of 182 individuals, team members placed as follows: Katlyn Kubitz, 91st; Cooper McKean, 98th; Kennadi Fusco, 106th; Katie Seger, 138th; Charlie Hollan, 142nd and Sarah Racut, 174th.
Lily Wolf of Hamilton has been named the Ohio state winner of the 2021 GROWMARK essay contest for FFA members. The theme of this year’s contest was “If you could invent a new technology to improve agriculture, what would it be?” Students were encouraged to think creatively, not necessarily realistically, as they described their ideal invention.
In her contest entry, Wolf said: “Imagine if we created biodegradable field signs made from petrochemicals. Not only would this help the environment, but it would also be cheaper in the long run.”
Wolf is a student at Edgewood High School and a member of the Edgewood/Butler Tech FFA chapter. Her FFA advisor is Kellie Beiser. As the contest winner, Wolf will receive a $500 award from GROWMARK. The Edgewood/Butler Tech FFA Chapter will also receive a $300 award in honor of her accomplishment.
