NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The NYPD says it’s increasing manpower at several subway stations.
This comes as the mayor took a swipe at the governor and MTA, declaring again that the system is safe.
As CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports, if you’re riding the rails in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio says you have nothing to fear.
“What’s happening right now is clearly at the instruction of the governor. The MTA leadership is fearmongering. I’ve never seen anything like it. Constantly saying something isn’t safe when it is,” de Blasio said Friday. “I’ve ridden the subways, so many folks in my life ride the subways all the time. They’re overwhelmingly safe.”
The 52-year-old father of three, seen in a photo taken by the TWU Local 100 union, is intubated and needed two emergency surgeries after a man passing through the train slashed him with an orange box cutter behind his ear and left him to die.
In another incident Thursday, police say a transit motorman was attacked in the Bronx after he confronted a man who was smoking on the train. The person allegedly went to the worker s cab, slammed the door into him and knocked him unconscious.

A New York man was called an anti-gay slur and stabbed with an ice pick while riding the subway, one of five recent incidents that police claim are part of a spike in violent crimes taking place on New York City’s public transit system.
The 28-year-old victim was riding a northbound D train while heading home to the Bronx on Wednesday evening around 11:15 p.m. when a man sat down next to him. The victim, feeling uncomfortable moved to another seat, prompting the suspect to start cursing and yelling at him, according to police.
