Hartford woman gets probation in toddler’s drowning case

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION A 29-year-old Hartford woman was placed on probation Thursday for failing to keep a close eye on her boyfriend’s toddler, who drowned in the White River, and then lying to police about it.
Laura Shaw, 29, pleaded guilty during a virtual hearing in Windsor Superior Court Thursday to one count of reckless endangerment and one count of giving false information to a police officer in connection with the July 2019 death of 18-month-old Heaven McEwan. Prosecutors have said Shaw was drinking alcohol and looking at her phone, rather than watching the girl during an outing to the river, and that she later lied about what she was doing before Heaven’s death.
