A plan to turn a former Boston-area veterans home into a shelter for hundreds of migrants has been slammed as “disgusting” by local residents, who say Massachusetts’ services should instead go to the nation’s heroes.
For two weeks, state and city officials evaluated a number of sites. The Melnea Cass Recreational Complex had all the elements they needed, but everyone knew local residents would be angered at losing use of the facility until summer. Until now, the shelters were buildings that were not being used.
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s office said Wednesday it would be closing the state-owned recreation center in Roxbury to convert it to a migrant shelter.
