The city of Ames heard from the two finalists for city assessor, a position directly related to residents property taxes.
The city hosted public presentations from Cass County Assessor Brenda Nelson and Boone County Assessor Paul Overton, both vying for the Ames position, broadcasted via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The city assessor is responsible for assessing all real estate within city limits to determine property taxes. The position became vacant after former City Assessor Greg Lynch decided to retire after 15 years on the job.
The two candidates not only share their current job title in common, but both come from agricultural upbringings as well.
