COVID-19 cases creep upward in Amarillo, hospitalizations remain low

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The new case average for COVID-19 cases in Amarillo is slowly creeping upward, but hospitalizations continue to stay low when compared with 2020 numbers.
The Amarillo Public Health Department reported a five-day average of 37 new cases of COVID-19 per day in the area, and variants are beginning to appear as that number rises.
Dr. Brian Weis, chief medical officer for NWTHS, said seven tests done at the hospital have come back positive for COVID-19 variants.
The city of Amarillo s public health department reported an increase of 49 COVID-19 cases in Potter and Randall counties from Tuesday in Wednesday’s COVID-19 report card. This brings the area s number of cases to 33,950 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Of the total, 396 are listed as active, which is an increase of 36 net active cases from Tuesday. There have been 32,816 recoveries and 738 deaths attributed to the virus since the start of the pandemic.
As of Wednesday, there have been 276,292 conducted COVID-19 tests reported to the public health department, 10 of which are pending. Wednesday’s report card also shows that Trauma Service Area A is recording a 2.91% COVID-19 hospitalization rate as of Tuesday. The rate is recorded daily by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

Of the total, 360 are listed as active, which is an increase of 65 net active cases from Monday. There have been 32,803 recoveries and 738 deaths attributed to the virus since the start of the pandemic.
During Tuesday’s COVID-19 update, which was part of the regular Amarillo City Council meeting, Casie Stoughton, public health director, said while the city remains at Level Yellow on its COVID-19 status level chart, there has been a recent increase of active cases, especially over the last week.

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - Several area City leaders and health experts has announced the recipients of the BBB Excellence in Community Service Award.
The awards will be presented at BBB’s NEW BBB Big Blue Bash, on May 21.
The Excellence in Community Service Award is given to individuals who have shown unfailing dedication to serving the community and who bring the core values set forth by the BBB to their everyday practices.
This year’s recipients are:
Officials with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), announced Tuesday that both entities are recommending a pause in administering the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after there have been reports of blood clots.
According to reporting from USA Today, the agencies are reviewing six reported cases of blood clots out of nearly 7 million individuals who have received this brand of COVID-19 vaccine. All six cases were in women between the ages of 18 and 48 and symptoms occurred six to 13 days after they received the vaccine. One individual has died while another has been hospitalized and in critical condition.
