The soldiers, including 21-year-old Collins, who were indicted for illegal weapons manufacturing and distribution, illustrate how military leaders have long resisted more careful vetting during recruitment. Despite posting white supremacist views online during recruitment and after enlistment, Collins didn’t raise any red flags. He was only investigated after anti-fascist activists and journalists publicized his Iron March posts in 2019.

Parris Island implements anti-extremism training following order from Pentagon

By KATE HIDALGO BELLOWS | The Island Packet | Published: February 18, 2021 (Tribune News Service) The Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island has added anti-extremism training to its 13-week-long bootcamp, a depot spokesperson said, in response to a stand down order from the Secretary of Defense to address extremism in the armed forces after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. The training, which will include classroom lessons and discussions, is a permanent change for the base, which trains all enlisted Marines east of the Mississippi River. It s a response to the Pentagon s order that all commanding officers and supervisors take one day to discuss the importance of our oath of office; a description of impermissible behaviors; and procedures for reporting suspected, or actual, extremist behaviors. Military leaders have until early April to complete the task.
