vaccinated people to begin wearing face coverings again in certain situations. right now delta is surging through the country. the map shows in red all the states experiencing case increases of 100% or more over the last two weeks. only 12 states, 12 of the 50 are not highlighted. the delta variant is responsible for most of these infections. joining me now is the virologist and immunologist dr. rick bright. we have known and know that people uninfected are getting the delta variant. that s the predominant variant in the united states and many other places at this point. the new news is how susceptible that those who are vaccinated are to this variant and possibly needs to mask up. you were in the u.s. government
should get three initial doses. that s not a booster, that s a different vaccine series for certain people. but the vast majority of people who are vaccinated are protected from infection. if they get infected, they re protected from severe disease and death. vaccination is likely to reduce your risk of death dramatically. we know this, it works, it s why despite the fact that i think we will see continued big increases in cases in the u.s., we won t see anything like the horrific death toll that we saw last year. but in areas where vaccine rates are low, vaccination rates are low, the good news, last point, stephanie, the good news is that about 80% of the most vulnerable are vaccinated so even if you do see those big case increases, you re not likely to see those huge death tolls. that doesn t mean it s okay, we still are seeing too many people die. i want to talk about this internal cdc document because it s got a whole lot of people
we re still dealing with individuals who are not taking this pandemic seriously. as a result, we re seeing that reflect in the large amount of folks getting infected, being hospitalized, and eventually we ll see an uptick in our death rates. and to that point, there are a few states with governors who have pushed back more on covid precautions than florida s ron desantis. even now he s vowing not to issue any covid mandates or anything like that. do you see his actions they re clearly political during this pandemic, but how much responsibility does he bear for these case increases? well, i feel he s the biggest reason. i mean as the leader of this state, his job is to protect the citizens. but rather than do that, he s really taken a very political stance, basically following the footsteps of donald trump, acting as though he s his mini me. and from masks to, you know,
