What a Winter That Was 2021
What a winter that was. And, before the last drifts of snow melt away, I wanted to share a few fat biking photos. If ever there was a year in which we really needed a long, lovely, winter 2020-2021 was it. It offered endless opportunities for outdoor activity.

Where I rode, it was a record-setting year in terms of snowfall, grooming, users, and circumstance. From the early first flakes in November to the long, sunny days of March, I was fueled by the joy of riding and connection in the Methow Valley.
Sunday
8:12 a.m. A caller in the 2000 block of Nevada City Highway reported a woman in her early 30s banging on people’s windows in the parking lot, dancing, and talking to herself.
8:27 a.m. A caller near Butler Street and Cadden Drive reported seeing a suspicious individual in a tan jacket taking photographs of a neighbor’s residence.
12:55 p.m. A caller from Pleasant Street called police to report a male subject behaving suspiciously outside of her residence. The caller said that she has heard the prowler outside for the last several nights from her upstairs apartment.
1:46 p.m. A caller from East Main and Bennett streets reported that she was being followed by a blue-and-white truck, driven by a male subject. The caller said that the subject slowed down and asked her if she wanted a ride, and that the same truck has also recently been following the caller’s roommate.

The spring clearing of the North Cascades Highway begins this week, after being closed since November 2020 due to the risk of avalanche and snow.
The Washington State Department of Transportation refers to this annual clearing as a “telltale sign of spring in the Pacific Northwest.”
State Route 20 is the northernmost route across the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington state, commonly referred to as the North Cascades Highway. It’s part of the Cascade Loop, a 400-mile driving tour through the Cascades.
