The Design District has a new, Nikkei-themed restaurant. Okami, a collaboration three years in the making between Cuban-American actor William Levyand Venezuelan restaurateur Pedro Orihuela, began service on February 15 at 156 NE 41st St., adjacent to the Prada boutique. Orihuela explains that he and Levy met in 2017 and realized they shared a vision for a members-only restaurant and lounge. The duo initially focused their search for a location in the Brickell neighborhood but shifted gears when Emilio Estefan, a friend of Levy s, told them about the 4,000-square-foot space that was available in the Design District. Processing… I already get the newsletter “When I arrived at the D.C. metro area 11 years ago, I barely had any Puerto Rican clients,” says Cindy Vargas, a hairstylist from Ponce, Puerto Rico, who owns Salon Laurel in Alexandria. “As a Puerto Rican, I was seen as exotic. Now, most of my clients are Puerto Rican, and they all ask me where I should eat Puerto Rican food.”  According to the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, the Puerto Rican population in the D.C. metropolitan area has increased by 42 percent since 2010. Most notably, there has been a 121 percent increase in D.C. proper over the past decade. With a more robust Puerto Rican population comes a heightened demand for a taste of home.
