Skeletons in Giant Jars Unearthed at Corsica Necropolis

As the excavation of individual tombs continued, the archaeologists discovered something quite remarkable. Rather than being buried in coffins, the majority of the skeletons had been entombed inside a type of tall, sturdy, ceramic jar known as amphorae. These seaworthy jars functioned primarily as containers of both liquid and dry consumer goods. They were used to store products that were imported to Corsica from Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) between the fourth and seventh centuries AD. Wine, olive oil , and brine were purchased by Corsicans from Carthaginian merchants in large quantities, which meant there would have been plenty of amphorae available to be repurposed as final resting places for the deceased.

Missouri House effort to defund Medicaid expansion a work in progress

by John Haughey, The Center Square contributor  | April 07, 2021 10:51 AM Print this article Despite pushback from some Republican senators and Gov. Mike Parson, the Missouri House is plunging forward with its plan to essentially defund the Medicaid expansion voters approved in August. The House Budget Committee on March 25 in a partisan 20-9 vote shot down House Bill 20, which sought to allocate $130 million in general revenue to secure $1.9 billion in federal funding to pay for Medicaid expansion for about 275,000 Missourians approved under Amendment 2. HB 20 was filed by House Budget chair Rep. Cody Smith, R-Carthage, to segregate Medicaid expansion appropriations from other Medicaid spending bills and require it be to separately approved.

Missouri House Passes State Budget Without Funding For Medicaid Expansion

/ Missouri House Budget Chair Cody Smith, R-Carthage, presents the state s spending plan for the fiscal year that begins on July 1. The Missouri House of Representatives passed its version of the $34.6 billion state budget on Thursday, leaving out funding for the voter-approved expansion of Medicaid. It was a move that was expected after the Republicans on the Budget Committee unanimously voted down a bill to fund expansion last week. Budget Chair Cody Smith, R-Carthage, had previously segregated Medicaid expansion funding in a separate bill. He said he made the decision because it was a complex policy. “It is a large expansion of a new program that is a very complicated policy matter that I believe deserves to be discussed and debated on its own merit, aside from what we already do in Missouri’s array of social services programs,” Smith said.
