The hospital started administering the vaccine Wednesday to frontline medical staff who are expected to come into contact with COVID-19 patients.
The first shipment of vaccines to Pensacola s civilian hospitals comes as Escambia County s COVID-19 numbers are seeing the largest increase since the pandemic began.
Escambia County added 1,167 new cases last week from Dec. 7 to 13, according to the Florida Department of Health. That beat the previous record of 973 new cases reported in a single week that was established just one week prior.
The number of Escambia County patients currently hospitalized for the virus also is reaching levels not seen since the pandemic s height in the summer.
