coming to you from msnbc world headquarters in new york city. welcome to alex witt reports . we begin with new fallout and w also the reaction to this historic verdict in donald trump s hush money trial. donald trump s attorney, acknowledging there is a chance the former president of the united states may be sentenced to jail time following his conviction on 34 felony counts. blanche telling the ap the defense will argue strenuously for a non-incarcerated tory sentence. and a short time ago new reaction from republican house speaker mike johnson s comments on saying trump s verdict will be overturned. here s what clark brewster, the attorney representing stormy daniels told me here on msnbc. the idea that they were some part of some conspiracy is nonsense and these 12 people that spent all the time in that courtroom, weeks listen to the evidence and according to the oath return a verdict is a true and honest verdict based upon the facts and evidence and i ct witnessed a cou
courtroom telling us what it looks like? so, you re going to have the prosecutors get up and ask for the sentence they want. i will tell you just in the brass tacks of this that i think it s a relatively it s a safer path for them to ask for some sort of incarceration sentence even if that s weekends or house arrest, which obviously some people would view as not being an actual sentence. is the easier path for prosecutors to push for that and given everything that trump is done, i think they can make a lot of good arguments for why they think that it s the case and then you will have the trump lawyers make their argument for why it shouldn t be an and carson tory sentence and i will assume they should ask whatever sentence that it s essentially suspended pending the appeal. i think that s going to be the key issue in all this and i think this is where the real rubber hits the road they re going to ask trump a chance to
speak before his sentence and that is really where i think he could do tremendous damage to his chances of getting out of that room clean, so to speak. you know, i don t want to predict the future. i don t think anybody can but i think we can make a guess as to what sorts of things trump might say in that situation? there s there s a possibility merchan could be in the pension have in mind what he s going to do . donald trump could speak and he could change it? it s always possible. i think most judges go into a sentencing, especially because they are presentence reports with a strong idea of where they are going. but the reason you hold the hearing sadly i m a jets fan and there s a famous jet sentence that you play to win the games. the reason you hold the hearing is to determine the sentence and things can happen at that hearing that change the sentence. and with donald trump things can be unexpected. devlin barrett, thank you. david henderson, thank you. something has cha
country that those are the kinds of things that basically dara judge to give him some kind of punishment, and carson tory sentence. that is a dangerous game of playing with fire. and will have to see how these two things, the political and legal world, come to had with each other. i m sure that merchan understands trump would speak out after the sentencing. there is no expectation that donald trump would not be donald trump or that he was not going to really be anybody who had just been found guilty on 34 counts in the falsification of business records he was in the public eye so how much he will actually take that into account, i think , is really in question. can you talk me through what we can expect from an actual sentencing? what would look like, even though we won t have cameras inside the courtroom does what will it look like for our reporters that will be writing to us standing outside the
jury has found him guilty that gives merchan eminence to say that i was balancing therewith this minute for the limits his ability to appeal based on conduct? payment what do you suspect when it comes to post sentencing? were looking at july 11 for sentencing. we don t have any idea what the sentence will look like but he is the presumptive republican nominee for president a couple days later and he will accept the nomination and make his way towards november. i ll be looking at a sentence that is delayed based upon appeal and then what if he wins the white house? look. all of these things are possible which is why this is such a fascinating case to cover. i m not a politics reporter. i m just a court rep, basically. and i ve got to tell you, we are in uncharted territory here so we will have to see how the judge is all the stuff you re going to have to see how trump response. remember that trump said in his postverdict announcement that he would call america a fascist
