now. highways submerges and the fast-rising water gridlocking traffic overnight, and drivers stranded since 11:00 last night. and the mayor and joining me on the phone. welcome, mayor. thank you, and good morning. i know you have a tough job on your hands today. how many people remain trapped on the roadways do you think? we are not sure. we had 130-plus high water rescues last night, and now with daylight mostly we have cars bobbing in the water. i think we have gotten those folks out. we are actually experiencing a two-stage flooding event. last night was torrential rain you know 11:00 to 1:00 say, and lots of folks on the road, and low water areas or high-water areas and low spots on the road just filled up and a lot of folks kept driving as
off the main island and a tsunami washed ashore shortly after the quake hit washing away cars and boats. we have those live pictures of that tsunami. if we can get back and get that on the air again for those viewers who perhaps have just joined us, because they are extraordinary shots. before we actually got that, we saw those cars bobbing in the water. it is not just japan that is under a tsunami warning. watches and warnings have been issued for the entire region. that includes russia, taiwan, the philippines, indonesia, just among a number of them. we are talking about more than a dozen or so. back on land, the quake rattled tokyo residents who are used to these events. they know when this is an unusual earthquake. when this is far greater than the ones the experience on a fairly regular basis. smoke rising from the building
