supply chain to households, costing an estimated $3.9 billion. supermarkets are genuinely, i think, trying to avoid food waste once they have purchased the product. but by rejecting certain forms of food before it gets to them, particularly in fresh produce, saying actually no, this carrot doesn t look like, we re not going to buy it, what ends up happening is that food is wasted before the supermarket purchases it. reporter: supermarkets are aware of our fleeting fancies and how we ve evolved into fussy eaters which is why they try to make sure any surplus at store level is reused. one way is to donate it to charities. we get in the region of about 3,000 tons of food a year. we reckon that that s less than 1% of the edible food that could be used to feed people in need across the uk. so i think on those statistics, everybody would admit and agree that there s more that we can do.
