Yet another noteworthy occasion occurred on this date 15 years ago.
On Feb. 14, 2006, New College of Florida hosted a lively public forum. The hot topic: homelessness.
The event responded to the National Coalition for the Homeless’ designation of Sarasota as America’s “meanest city.” Sarasota was tagged after the City Commission passed an ordinance authorizing police to arrest homeless people for camping in outdoor public spaces.
Some proponents of the local law simply wanted to sweep away homeless folks. Others believed the ordinance was the best available tool for getting people off the streets.
The label riled up locals, prompting Jake Hartvigsen, who worked for New College, to call me. He asked how the community might respond to the bad publicity by starting something good. We agreed to jointly sponsor a public forum, which attracted a capacity crowd at Sainer Pavilion.

AS healthcare workers struggle to contain a second wave of COVID-19, some hope is at hand with the formal licensing approval of a simple, efficient, portable and cost-effective device that delivers consistently high levels of oxygen to COVID-19 patients and helps keep their lungs from collapsing.
This proudly South African invention, named OxERA (Oxygen-Efficient Respiratory Aid), could be a game changer where there are a large number of COVID-19 patients lacking skilled staff, ICU and high care facilities, and insufficient bulk oxygen supplies.

As South African healthcare workers struggle to contain a second wave of COVID-19, some hope is at hand with the formal licencing approval of a simple, efficient, portable and cost-effective device that delivers consistently high levels of oxygen to COVID-19 patients and helps keep their lungs from collapsing.
This proudly South African invention, named OxERA (Oxygen-Efficient Respiratory Aid), could be a game changer where there are a large number of COVID-19 patients yet a lack of skilled staff, ICU and high care facilities; and insufficient bulk oxygen supplies. It effectively bridges the gap between current standard oxygen therapy via face masks and ICU-based non-invasive or mechanical ventilation, while requiring no more oxygen flow than a standard face mask.
VENICE – If Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt Hoffman had his way, Tuesday afternoon’s swearing-in ceremony would have been a simple matter of stopping by Chief Judge Kimberly Bonner’s chambers with his wife, Teri Hoffman, to recite the oath of office.
Instead, Hoffman found himself on stage at the Venice Community Center, addressing a room full of friends, colleagues and well-wishers – including elected officials, area police chiefs and adjacent county sheriffs – as he thanked everyone for his good fortune.
“It’s not about me, it’s about you in the community,” Hoffman stressed to both the audience in attendance and those watching the socially-distanced ceremony on Facebook Live.
