Daily Press case against hospital moves forward

Daily Press case against hospital moves forward Written by Geoffrey Plant on May 12, 2021 A judge on Tuesday tossed out a motion by Gila Regional Medical Center’s attorneys to dismiss the lawsuit filed last year by the Daily Press against the county-owned hospital over its denial of an Inspection of Public Records Act request concerning COVID-19 patient statistics. Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Jim Foy said the case can move forward, but he encouraged the hospital and the newspaper to consider settling the matter out of court or through a mediator. Barring such a development, the hospital must now respond within 30 days to a motion to compel discovery to produce evidence that Daily Press attorney Will Perkins filed last month.

Opinion: I need a solution for the squirrel emptying my bird feeder

I hung a bird feeder on my front patio. It is positioned so that, sitting in my favorite chair, I can watch the birds come and feed. Predictably, though, the feeder was discovered by a squirrel, and this guy would just suck up however much seed I’d put into the feeder in a few minutes.  I learned not to ever fill the feeder completely, but to put a day’s worth out and hope that the birds got to it before he did. In the beginning, whenever I saw the squirrel, all I had to do was open the front door and, whoosh! he was gone, completely out of sight. As the days went by, he grew more and more bold. I’d not only have to open the door, but I had to walk outside toward the feeder.

An update on Avalon Ranch

Many of us could sure use some positive news, and we’ve received some over the weekend. Dr. Jenny Felmley with New Mexico’s Behavioral Health Services Division informed us that BHSD has given the Avalon Ranch project the nod to hire an executive director and begin the process of certification as an Accredited Residential Treatment Facility. This effort has been in development for many years – since the original Crossroads program closed its doors. Crossroads was a residential treatment facility for women with children, and the loss was devastating. The unique nature of the program resulted in a high number of women overcoming their addictions and becoming productive citizens.
