REPOST: February 8, 2021 is the 53rd anniversary. Ora Sue Smith Hughes shares memories about her brother, Henry Smith (1948-1968), one of the three slain victims in the Orangeburg Massacre. South Carolina State College student Henry Smith had an interest in the growing civil rights movement, admiring leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. His death continues to impact the family, even the generation who didn t have the opportunity to know him in person. On the evening of February 8, 1968, SCSU students started a bonfire on the front of campus which is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. As police and firefighters attempted to put out the fire, officer David Shealy was injured by a thrown object. As a result, South Carolina Highway Patrol officers fired shots at the protestors.

SC woman celebrates 100th birthday with parade

Updated: 4:49 PM EST January 30, 2021 SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. A South Carolina woman was celebrated with a parade on Saturday in honor of her 100th birthday.  Dr. Edna Louise Davis, recently 100, was celebrated with a drive-thru parade on Saturday from the Sumter First Baptist Church to her home in Sumter. According to the information received from Minerva L. Paige, Dr. Davis was born on January 27, 1921 in Sumter and was the youngest of three. She then moved to Tuskegee, Alabama where she lived on a government reservation and began school, according to Paige. She graduated from the Tuskegee Institute in 1937 as Valedictorian then went on to earn her Bachelor s Degree, membership into Pi Kappa Lambda National Honor Society in Music, and Master of Music Education degree at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. This followed credits earned at the Julliard School of Music. She received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Boston University, according to Paige
