Sen. Jay Chaudhuri: Concerns exist about NCHSAA, but HB 91 is moving too quickly, too fast

Sen. Jay Chaudhuri, the Democratic Whip, said he shares some of the concerns about the NCHSAA that his Republican colleagues have brought forward, but he believes a proposal to dissolve the NCHSAA and create a new organization is moving too quickly through the legislature. Chaudhuri said he would prefer working with the NCHSAA to find a solution.

Since the start of the Jan. 13 North Carolina General Assembly legislative session, several bills have been filed that could impact military families and veterans if passed into law.
There are bills that would appropriate state funds to benefit Fayetteville s local military museum, to one that could eliminate a tax for veterans.
Other bills would recognize military spouses or benefit military children who want to play sports and transfer to a new school.
Here s a look at some of the bills that have been filed: House Bill 457 and Senate Bill 500 seek to appropriate funds to the Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum Foundation. The foundation supports the museum, which is located in downtown Fayetteville.
Patrick Kelly with the Palmetto State Teachers Association said he thinks this is a good step forward. I think we have reached a place, because of teacher vaccinations, which A) increases the health and safety in the building, but B) it enhances the staffing in the building, Kelly said. But, our schools are better equipped to manage a five-day instructional model and so, if that s what families want for their students, they should be able to opt for that.
Kelly, who is also a teacher, said even though some students have excelled virtually, many students have not. As we hopefully start to move out of the pandemic, especially as we are transitioning into the summer and into the fall of 2021, the closer we can get back to face-to-face instruction for all students, I think that is going to be the best outcome for our students across South Carolina, Kelly said.
