For decades, the Green Book travel guide helped African American families move safely through the segregation-era South. Now, a History professor and her students are using the book as a jumping off point to reconnect with early 20th century Black life in Elizabeth City.
Answers found at the future site of North Carolina Freedom Park could tell more local history not just from records of the landowning white men, but the enslaved African Americans who labored and lived there and the Native Americans who may have predated all of them on the site.

History lives on in the communities where formerly enslaved people settled after the end of the Civil War, and the safe havens where Black Americans sought refuge from the dangers of Jim Crow. Legacies endure in the colleges and universities that birthed generations of Black scholars and leaders, and in the homes of prominent musicians and poets.
Dozens of these places will now be preserved for years to come, thanks to a total of $3 million in grants from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.
