Carnell Willoughby’s vegan pop-up,
Willowbeez SoulVeg, held its grand opening this week at the North Market (59 Spruce St.). The vegan soul food eatery fills the northwest corner space vacated by Pistacia Vera. Willowbeez serves several entrees, such as No’Fish Fry and So’Lasagna, as well as soups, salads, wraps, sandwiches and a handful of brunch items. Willowbeez has been in business as a pop-up and catering company since 2012, but this is its first permanent space.
High Bank Distillery Co. (1051 Goodale Blvd.) bagged several awards recently at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Fast on the heels of the new North Market in Dublin and Budd Dairy Hall in Italian Village, New Albany soon will be home to a food hall of its own.
Bubbly Hall is scheduled to open in the fall at the corner of Central College and New Albany roads. It will feature 10 local food companies offering a variety of cuisines.
Crepes, vegan soul food, Americanized Mediterranean and Mexican street food will be among the offerings. Bubbly will feature eight permanent vendors and two spots for pop-up vendors.
The permanent vendors are Fay s Crepes, Levant Mediterranean Eatery, Rocoto (a new venture), Tortilla, Beyond the Brix, Willowbeez SoulVeg, Afra Grill and Solo Merengues Bakery.
Openings & Announcements
Lola’s Kitchen + Bar is expected to open soon at 201 S. High St., a Downtown restaurant space that has been empty since short-lived Tio’s Tacos and Tequila left the picture. Lola’s owners are restaurant veterans whose past businesses include Cinco, Café Lola and Burgers Dogs and Fries.
Martha’s Fusion Kitchen, a North Linden spot for Mexican food and more, recently opened at 3331 Maize Road, formerly Bella’s Pizza. The eclectic menu includes salads, barbacoa and birria tacos, gyros and pizzas.
The Jimmy V’s space at 912 S. High St. is under new ownership and now has a new name:

Harvest Pizzeria is now the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium’s official pizza provider. Zoo visitors can now find the pizza at the Congo River Market Food Court and Mapori Restaurant in Heart of Africa, as well as at Harbor Pizza when Zoombezi Bay opens. No word yet on whether the animals like Spicy Yuma.
