Covid lockdown: Rockwater Hove s shacks will remain shut

Rockwater’s Shacks by the Shore A SET of huts on Hove seafront will stay shut until the government relaxes its coronavirus restrictions. The decision was shared in an email to Brighton and Hove City Council before a licensing panel met to decide whether the huts could continue to sell alcohol. The huts – Rockwater’s Shacks by the Shore – are to stay shut for the immediate future – even for hot food and drinks. The decision followed concerns about people failing to respect the rules about social distancing and crowding the promenade. The council had granted the huts a temporary licence while the owner refurbished the main Rockwater building – previously known as Venue, the View, Babylon Lounge and the West End Café.

Rockwater has applied for a drinks licence on Hove Seafront

Rockwater Shacks THE owner of a set of “shacks” on Hove seafront will learn next month whether he can have a permanent drinks licence. Luke Davis, who runs Rockwater, known for many years as the West End Café, wants to be able to sell alcohol from Shacks by the Shore, with the shacks resembling beach huts. The current temporary licence was due to expire last week so Mr Davis applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for a permanent licence to sell drinks until 10pm. But some neighbours have objected and now a council licensing panel has been asked to decide the application.

Brighton and Hove council meeting embroiled in racism row

BRIGHTON and Hove city council debated nuclear weapons in an explosive meeting branded “disgraceful” by the standards chief after a row about racism. City councillors debated the feasibility and benefits of nuclear disarmament in a Full Council meeting which was abandoned after the live stream went down amid technical difficulties. The meeting became embroiled in a row about racism. Conservative councillor Mary Mears questioned the council’s anti-racist stance after councillor Nancy Platts had not answered Argus questions relating to her time in Jeremy Corbyn’s office when he was Labour leader. These questions were raised in October following the publication of a damning report by the human rights watchdog which found the Labour Party responsible for “unlawful” harassment and discrimination of its Jewish members.
