A revised “environmental impact report” is now being circulated by the county of Monterey regarding their controversial plan to hold back flood waters from the Carmel River lagoon.
Kelsey Scanlon, the director of the county Department of Emergency Management, reported to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that the storm and powerful wave action that hit the Central Coast beginning Dec. 27 damaged both public and private property throughout Monterey County, including areas adjacent to the Carmel River and Carmel River Lagoon, as well as the Salinas River and the Salinas River Lagoon.
Santa Cruz County is seeking financial relief after an estimated $4 million worth in damage was done from the large swells, while Monterey County is looking to be reimbursed for mitigation efforts.
An update on the status of the Carmel River Lagoon on Thursday from County of Monterey public information officer Maia Carroll said that county crews mobilized on Wednesday afternoon to manage the Carmel Lagoon sandbar by constructing a small pilot channel with hand tools.
