CARMEL RICKARD: Righting past wrongs in Namibia Restitution is on the cards for Namibia as a former colonial ruler promises compensation and unjust laws against gay men look to be scrapped BL PREMIUM 03 June 2021 - 05:00
Namibia is having some success sorting out historic injustices. News last week was that the governments of Germany and Namibia have agreed on compensation for the terrible period, more than a century ago, when German soldiers almost obliterated the Herero and Nama people.
The resolution, many years in the making, includes an apology, new terminology that will at last name these early 20th-century atrocities as a genocide, and a $1.3bn budget for reconstruction and development.

The Ombud would have deputies for the first time due to the Press Council s restructuring.
The Press Council of South Africa (PCSA) announced the appointment of Carmel Rickard as the new Press Ombud on Monday.
The council also announced Rickards deputies are Herman Scholtz and Tyrone August.
The veteran journalists only recently took up their positions, the organisation s executive director, Latiefa Mobara, said.

Mobara said Green had resigned in December to take up a job at the University of Cape Town.
Towards a People’s Constitution for Botswana
2021-04-07
Moses Magadza
A constitution, developed through wide consultations with the people it is intended to serve, is more likely to be a widely accepted and respected document than one crafted behind the scenes and foisted onto the people. This seems to be the pith or fulcrum of ‘Towards A People’s Constitution for Botswana’, one of four recent books by Justice Oagile Bethuel Key Dingake.
Last year, I reviewed two of Dingake’s books, namely: ‘Judges’ and ‘In Pursuit of Justice’. I promised to review the remaining two books, being: ‘Towards A People’s Constitution for Botswana’ (which I review here) and ‘Lawyers’, which I will review soon – time permitting. Notion Press (India, Singapore and Malaysia) published all these books, which are available on online platforms, including Amazon and as Kindle eBooks. ‘Towards A People’s Constitution for Botswana’ was published towards the end 2020.
