Carlsbad, New Mexico | The Caverns and So Much More

04/30/2021 When you think of visiting Carlsbad, the first destination you likely consider is the world-famous caverns. But if that’s the only place you explore, you’re missing out on many other adventures! Let’s visit Carlsbad, starting with the caverns and then going above and beyond, finding more great outdoor opportunities where it is easy to be socially distant. Carlsbad Caverns National Park Perched high on a Permian bluff is the visitor center for Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Thanks to a unique geologic history, travelers today can explore the huge caverns that are decorated with breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, draperies, ribbons, and popcorn. Water dripping into the limestone caverns across the millennia has slowly built these formations, a process that continues today.

Carlsbad s Halagueño Arts Park a home for visual, performance arts

Through it all, each piece of art resonates with visitors. “Ball in the Window” by William Weaver. Wren Prather-Stroud is the secretary of the New Mexico Arts Commission. She’s also been around to see the arts park grow – not only in size – but in the amount of public art in the area. “Cougar” by Cynthia Rowland. “Because of the arts park, the area has grown exponentially,” Prather-Stroud says. “Before COVID, we used to have live performances down there and a movies in the park series. We haven’t had anything in awhile. There is a reason that we added the ‘s’ to arts park. We wanted it to be a home for visual arts and performance arts. The park has become a fabric of our lives.”

City of Carlsbad update: Hats off to Dr Rath

City of Carlsbad update: Hats off to Dr. Rath Dale Janway A former Carlsbad resident has been in the national news for her efforts to help organize the COVID-19 vaccination process for the citizens of her community who want them. Dr. Keri Rath (formerly Keri Gard), who was the Carlsbad High School valedictorian in 1994, is now an OB/Gyn in Ruidoso. She was featured by CBS for recruiting her “Fabulous Ladies Book Club” to help with the vaccination process, and the Washington Post profiled the group in a Jan. 26 article. Rath’s husband, Dr. Stephen Rath, has had his clinic turned into a vaccination clinic. Medical professionals still administer the vaccines, but members of the book club have been assisting with the logistics and outreach related to the state’s tiered vaccination system. Thank you to Dr. Rath and her volunteers for doing their part to help New Mexicans, and for making Carlsbad proud.  Reminder: the hotline for vaccination questions is 1-855-600-3453.
