Jump in Eddy County COVID cases connected to data backlog

The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) reported 19 new cases of COVID-19 in Eddy County from June 5 to June 7, a significant increase from previous days the department attributed to the inclusion of old data which had been backlogged. These results were not electronic submissions, but faxes that were backlogged and just being entered now, said Dan Sosin, DOH epidemiologist in the email to the City of Carlsbad reviewed by the Current-Argus.   Jimmy Masters, DOH s southeast region director, said Eddy County residents should not be concerned about the increased cases reported.  For right now it means Eddy County is in the Turquoise color. Eddy County has had low numbers. It was just data not being logged, he said. It s older information. Eddy County is still looking good.

“The delays in processing the death records were due to a variety of reasons during the COVID-19 pandemic to include the processing of deaths of New Mexico residents occurring out-of-state as well as incomplete or inaccurate information at the time of death,” cited DOH’s press release. DOH reported a woman in her 70s died from COVID-19 in the past 30 days. She was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. She was a resident of Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad. In a Wednesday press release, DOH indicated at one least one positive COVID-19 case in residents or staff in the past 28 days at Lakeview Christian Home.

New Mexico Governor signs independent Carlsbad college bill

Michelle Lujan Grisham signed House Bill 212, also known as Remaking NMSU Carlsbad branch campus into an independent College, on April 7. HB 212 creates the Southeast New Mexico College effective July 1, 2021. It was passed in the New Mexico House and New Mexico Senate during the 2021 regular legislative session, along with its companion bill Senate Bill 236.  I could not be more pleased with the outcome, said New Mexico Rep. Cathrynn Brown who sponsored HB 212. While we will always honor New Mexico State University as an excellent institution of higher education and we are thankful for our many years of alliance with the NMSU system, the coming change will be markedly beneficial.
