Mercedes went into the last race of an unprecedented campaign, with 17 races packed into 23 weekends, with a superb record at Yas Marina, but their usual power advantage was nowhere to be seen as Red Bull took the spoils. The top three positions remained unchanged throughout with Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton constantly running second and third, as the seven-time World Champion returned to action following his self-isolation having tested positive for COVID-19, forcing him to miss last week’s Sakhir Grand Prix.

Bottas sat P1 with a 1:36.276 and Hamilton was two tenths behind after seeing a faster time set on the soft tyres deleted for exceeding track limits. Max Verstappen, after claiming P1 in FP1, was back in his usual top three spot. The race simulation runs were hampered by some end-0f-season reliability issues as both George Russell and Kimi Raikkonen’s car came to a smoky, fiery end with some tired old engines.

Max quickest as Schumacher name returns Date published: December 11 2020 Max Verstappen pipped Valtteri Bottas to P1 in the opening practice session for the Abu Dhabi GP as Lewis Hamilton returned to the grid and so too did the Schumacher name. Formula 1 drove out into the sunshine for the first time in three weeks, starting the season finale in Abu Dhabi with a daylight practice session at the Yas Marina circuit. World Champion Lewis Hamilton was back in his W11 after testing negative with George Russell returning to Williams. Haas had an interesting line up for the session with a Schumacher and Fittipaldi in action. Mick Schumacher was testing the VF20, replacing Kevin Magnussen for Friday’s first practice, while Pietro Fittipaldi once again subbed for the injured Romain Grosjean. Alfa Romeo had Robert Kubica in the car for the session.
