People from Mexico show stunning amount of genetic diversity

Imagine if people from Kansas and California were as genetically distinct from each other as someone from Germany is from someone from Japan. That’s the kind of remarkable genetic variation that scientists have now found within Mexico, thanks to the first fine-scale study of human genetic variation in that country. This local diversity could help researchers trace the history of the country’s different indigenous populations and help them develop better diagnostic tools and medical treatments for people of Mexican descent living all over the world.

The ex-husband of Liewatha, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, co-founded a DNA testing company and wrote one of the first computer codes for making genetic comparisons, The Washington Examiner reports.
Jim Warren was involved in the kinds of testing that Warren used to prove [disprove] she is a Native-American.
He was a co-founder of FamilyTreeDNA and worked with Carlos Bustamante, the Stanford geneticist who tested her using Mexican, Peruvian, and Columbian DNA. His conclusion was that there’s a “strong suggestion” Warren had Native-American ancestry 6 to 10 generations ago.
Jim Warren died in 2006. Although they had two children together, there was no love lost between them.

Of all the pandemic questions bedeviling scientists, the one that Juan Perilla is asking might be among the strangest: If a shrunk-down hand were to squeeze the coronavirus, would it squish, or would it shatter?
Viruses like HIV tend to be on the softer side, smooshing down like a foam ball, whereas the ones that cause influenza are more brittle, prone to cracking like an egg, said Perilla, a biophysical chemist at the University of Delaware in Newark. Coronaviruses, he suspects, are somewhere in the middle, a sort of tactile Goldilocks in the world of infectious disease.
