Carlisle United legend Ron Ginger Thompson s grandchildren take on gruelling charity challenges in his memory

Carlisle United legend Ginger Thompson, pictured on his 80th birthday in 2012 (photo: David Hollins) He was known for his ability to run all day – and then run some more. And now Ron “Ginger” Thompson’s grandchildren are embarking on a series of charity challenges in the Carlisle United legend’s hard-working image. One of the Blues’ longest-serving and most fondly-remembered players died last year aged 88. As a tribute, members of his family are using the number 88 as inspiration for some gruelling challenges to raise money for Hospice at Home, the charity that cared for Ginger in his final days. Alice Thompson, 32, is set to run 88 laps of a running track – an arduous challenge of about 22 miles which could take Ginger’s eldest granddaughter up to four hours to complete.
