And now Ron “Ginger” Thompson’s grandchildren are embarking on a series of charity challenges in the Carlisle United legend’s hard-working image. One of the Blues’ longest-serving and most fondly-remembered players died last year aged 88. As a tribute, members of his family are using the number 88 as inspiration for some gruelling challenges to raise money for Hospice at Home, the charity that cared for Ginger in his final days. Alice Thompson, 32, is set to run 88 laps of a running track – an arduous challenge of about 22 miles which could take Ginger’s eldest granddaughter up to four hours to complete.
