Opposition grows at increased risk of FGM

Newsbook ‘We are winning the fight’ – EIGE Photo: EIGE The number of girls at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) within the EU appears to be on the increase due to immigration from areas where it is practiced – but opposition to the practice in the migrant communities concerned is growing, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality. To mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation – which is observed on 6 February, the EIGE published estimations of the number of girls at risk in a number of EU countries, namely Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg and Austria. FGM is practiced by various communities in parts of Africa and Asia, and involves the medically-unjustifiable removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. It is increasingly becoming illegal – Malta officially banned the practice in 2014.
