Notebook: Lineup change doesn’t spark UMass in loss to Bryant

Matt McCall’s line change did not have its intended effect.
The UMass coach subbed out all five starters just 1 minute, 57 seconds into the second half. Bryant led by nine. The Minutemen’s previous four possessions featured a turnover by Tre Mitchell, a Mitchell foul, Noah Fernandes missing a 3-pointer and a Carl Pierre missed 3.
He pulled out Javohn Garcia, Fernandes, Pierre, Ronnie DeGray III and Mitchell in favor of Kolton Mitchell, Cairo McCrory, Mark Gasperini and Dibaji Walker.

Carl Pierre splashed his first three 3-pointers Wednesday at La Salle. That’s more triples than he made in the previous two games against Northeastern.
UMass’ senior captain was shooting 28.6 percent from 3 before Wednesday and 31.8 percent overall, but Pierre found the range early as he scored 14 points and made four 3s in the 85-66 win over the Explorers.
He made his first 3 just 1 minute, 51 seconds into the game. He splashed his second 1:25 later. Pierre hit his third with 9:32 left before halftime to give UMass a 23-17 lead.

Tre Mitchell and Carl Pierre launched themselves to the floor with no hesitation to save a loose ball.
The Minutemen led by four 5 minutes, 30 seconds into the second half of their Atlantic 10 Conference opener Wednesday at La Salle. The Explorers missed a 3-pointer and Jhamir Brickus jumped into the corner to save it. He eyed Jared Kimbrough on the left wing. Mitchell tracked the pass through the air and sprawled out to tip the ball away.
