In a statement announcing the new hires, Keller Williams co-founder Gary Keller said that “our enduring commitment to amassing the talent to best drive our vision for the future of real estate is clear.”
Big changes like this always garner questions and speculation. But here’s the deal: Building a business is messy at the best of times, and it can get really messy when it’s part of an industry that is changing as rapidly as real estate. Like with most growing organizations, leadership changes over time, but Gary Keller’s message has not.

Last week, Keller Williams dominated the real estate headlines as the media, fellow real estate professionals and industry veterans discussed the “shakeup” in the C-suite in Austin. Big changes like this always garner questions and speculation it’s a normal human reaction. But here’s the deal: Building a business is messy at the best of times, and it can get really messy when it’s part of an industry that’s changing as rapidly as real estate.

Twenty years ago at the RE/MAX convention, company founder Dave Liniger arrived in a green Humvee, dressed in military fatigues and black boots. He delivered a passionate speech dubbed, “Real Estate Wars.” He was “doing battle with the dot.coms, who believe they’re entitled to part of the real estate commission.”
Twelve years later, I sat on stage at the RE/MAX convention in Las Vegas with Liniger for a one-on-one interview.
A small group of Palestinian protestors were marching outside, because of the real estate company’s big presence in Israel
As we were getting mic’d up, Dave leaned over and discreetly adjusted a small pistol and its ankle holster underneath his pants leg. His oversized German Shepherd Max was standing front and center, right off the stage, fixed on his master.

King’s ascension from the co-director of growth to the top role overseeing the franchisor’s residential real estate business came hours after outgoing President Josh Team announced his departure on Facebook.
The announcement was made in a Zoom call with regional leaders viewed by Inman and confirmed by a company spokesperson. The company also confirmed a number of new leadership roles for existing executives.
Matt Green, who also served with King as co-director of growth will serve as head of agent and partner experience. Jason Abrams, previously the vice president of industry, will serve as the head of industry.
