A 28-member hit squad made up of Americans and Colombians assassinated President Jovenel Moise, Haitian police said Thursday, adding that eight were still at large as the country lurched into political chaos.
One day after Moise was killed and his wife Martine wounded by gunmen in their Port-au-Prince home, the poorest country in the Americas has no president or working parliament and two men claiming to be in charge as prime minister. Police paraded some of the suspects before the media Thursday, along with Colombian passports and weapons they had seized. The head of the Haiti s National Police, Leon Charles, vowed to track the other eight down.

Haitian police were on Thursday hunting for more gunmen behind the assassination of President Jovenel Moise after killing or capturing six mercenaries , with the nation under a state of siege.

Four gunmen were killed by Haitian police, and two more taken into custody, while other members of the hit squad are at large, Police Chief Leon Charles said.

Four “presumed assassins” of Haiti’s president Jovenel Moïse were shot by police and two others were captured, the country’s police chief said on Wednesday.
Haiti’s police chief, Léon Charles, said in a statement that three police officers were held hostage and subsequently freed in the operation.
“Four mercenaries were killed, two were intercepted under our control. Three policemen who had been taken hostage have been recovered,” Charles said.
