Spanish Fort approves more fire department funding

By Guy Busby SPANISH FORT – City Council members increased funding for the Spanish Fort Volunteer Fire Department by 20 percent, to $1 million, as the municipality continues to study making the organization a city department. The council voted unanimously in a special meeting Wednesday, Jan. 6, to approve the annual contract with the fire department. The contract calls for the city to provide $1 million to the department in the current fiscal year that began Oct. 1. Last year, the city gave the department $800,000. Mayor Mike McMillan said the increase would be about enough to cover the department’s 2019-20 deficit of $179,000. This year, the SFVFD also plans to add three more full-time paid firefighters and will need to begin payments on a loan for a new fire engine.

Letter to the Editor: Rough regime changes dot world s history

Letter to the Editor: Rough regime changes dot world s history The Alliance Review To the Editor: History has recorded many regime changes over the centuries. From earliest times, men have desired power and have tried to gain it in any way possible. Some have raised armies, some have used assassination, some relied on foreign assistance, and some had more subversive means.  In England, Oliver Cromwell raised an army and defeated King Charles I. Then, two years after his death, Charles II became king and the monarchy was restored. Some regimes are short lived.  In around 600 B.C. Amon, the king of Judah was assassinated by some of his officials, and his son Josiah became king. The assassins were soon executed.

Jan. 7, 1931 Wexford County farmers may receive some drought aid asked of Congress, if is appropriated. The proposition was brought up at a conference on federal seed and fertilizer law, Ralph Biebesheimer, county agricultural agent, told the Board of Supervisors this morning. A $15 million food loan was added by the senate to the $45 million drought appropriation measure passed by the house. Questioned as to whether there would be any of this money needed in Wexford County, Mr. Biebesheimer said he believed there were several farmers in this county who would like to avail themselves of it. A farmer can borrow money at about 5% interest. His loan has to be passed upon by a local committee which includes one banker and four farmers, the latter from the various sections of the county. Loans will be available to those worthy and in need of them, he said.
