IF ALL goes well, Penang could achieve Covid-19 herd immunity earlier than expected, with 70% or 1.38 million people, getting vaccinated by August.
State health committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin said the present vaccination of 14, 814 daily doses this month would be ramped up to 35, 165 doses next month, and 35, 572 doses in August.
She said 103, 627 targeted recipients in the state had obtained the first dose while another 73, 607 had received both doses as of June 3.
Dr Norlela said a comprehensive plan was presented at the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) meeting recently.
“All our systems are in place to attain this. These proposals were discussed at an earlier CITF meeting.

Elderly folk turned up in droves at vaccination centres nationwide to get their first Covid-19 vaccine doses in the first eight states to roll out Phase Two of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme.
In George Town, three nonagenarians are looking forward to keeping the virus at bay now that they have received their first shot.
Among them was retired construction developer Lee Ah Kim, 97.
“I am the first in my family to get the jab. My son signed me up for the vaccination and drove me here.
“I’m not worried as I am healthy, ” he said when met at the Caring Society Complex here yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged the federal government to accept offers from its state counterparts and private firms to help expedite Malaysia’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.
Anwar said while these parties were both willing and able to assist in the National Immunisation Programme that he noted has only vaccinated under 3 per cent of the population so far.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 The first day of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme’s (PICK) second phase yesterday saw an 84 per cent attendance rate, according to Coordinating Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.
The science, technology and innovation minister further said the vaccines allocated to those who did not show up for their appointment were also not wasted as these were given to volunteers present at the inoculation drive.
