Roanoke Fire-EMS, Carilion Children’s team up for free child safety seat checks The checks will happen every Thursday of each month Published:  Monthly child safety seat installation ROANOKE, Va. – If you have children, you may have experienced the struggle of trying to properly install a car seat. Roanoke Fire-EMS is teaming up with Carilion Children’s safe kids to make sure your child’s safety seat is installed correctly. These free checks will happen on the third Thursday of each month. The checks will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Station 6 on Jamison Ave. You don’t need appointments.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in both 2018 and 2019, a record 53 kids died from vehicular heatstroke. In 2020, due to the pandemic, that number dropped to 24. So far in 2021, one child has died. Jill Lucas Drakeford, Carilion Children’s Safe Kids coordinator said those numbers don’t include close-calls.
