But for one Ottawa County teen, she s breaking barriers not only as the lone female in her tech center repair class, but also as one of the standout students in the program. Eva Mokma is a senior at Zeeland High School, and this year, she s made a real impact in school and in her community.

Hudsonville High Student in Running for Google Art Honor By Gary Stevens May 12, 2021 | 4:51 PM OLIVE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A doodle by a Hudsonville High student has earned a statewide honor and could be in line for a national accolade. Magdelyn Marchinkewicz’ “I Am Strong” beat out over 45,000 entries to win the Doodle for Google art contest for Michigan, and her work is in the running for the national title, which comes with a $30,000 college scholarship for her and a $50,000 tech package for the Careerline Tech Center, where she is a graphic design program student. “My doodle demonstrates ‘I Am Strong’ because of how we can all come together as one,” Marchinkewicz said in a Careerline Tech release. “I showed everyone’s differences and how we are all similar in many different ways.”

Three local art students are making an impression. See what I did there? Hudsonville seniors Audrey Judge-Ponstein and Gage Rogers and Black River Public School senior Sierra Lynch were all recently named Gold Key winners in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  They re all either current Careerline Tech Center students or an alum. They re moving on to national competitions.  Meanwhile, Gage has already secured a $72,000 scholarship to the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Sierra got a $104,000 scholarship to study at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

Careerline Tech Center students donate food to Holland Rescue Mission

Sentinel Staff HOLLAND  A program at the Careerline Tech Center recently raised money to provide for a pair of area nonprofits.  Students in the Culinary Arts program at the CTC, a service of the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, raised money by selling homemade jam and other goods. The students then used that money to support Holland Rescue Mission. Funds raised each school year typically go toward field trips, class projects and charities. During student-led monthly meetings, students decided to use the money this year to support community members who have been significantly impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Students put together 175 boxed meals that were distributed through Holland Rescue Mission and the Gateway Community Center. Students were responsible for developing a menu, making the food, and then packing and preparing the boxes for distribution.
