Chamber adds three to board

AUBURN — The DeKalb Chamber Partnership has added three new board members — Pete Kempf, Chad Sutton and Matt Faber — to fill seats left vacant by terms ending and resignations earlier this year. Kempf serves as a financial adviser for Credent Wealth Management. He previously worked as the head of the Business and Vocational Department, head football coach, Baron Television director and educator at DeKalb High School. Kempf is a Wabash College graduate with degrees in history, education and psychology. He earned an Master of Business Administration degree from Western Governors University. He serves the community as a member of the Rotary Club and with the Friends of the Eckhart Public Library. He and his wife, Jackie, have two daughters, Rowan and Lottie, and a son, Peter the 7th. Donation benefits Garrett s Career Development Program

GARRETT — Garrett High School has received $149,000 in funding from the 80/20 Foundation Trust for new equipment for the school’s Career Development Program. Danielle Rich, grants manager for the foundation, presented the check to Chad Sutton, director of Garrett’s Career Development Program Jan. 25. The trust, born from the legacy of Don Wood, is based in Columbia City. Its key grant areas include industrial, machine tool and engineering technology, sales, entrepreneurism and leadership. Sutton said the grant will be used to purchase a Lincoln Torch-mate 4z8 Plasma Table to support welding and engineering/design programs supporting collaboration between programs and opportunities within the industry plus additional miscellaneous equipment to support structural welding and the school’s engineering and design program.

• Kayleen McCabe of the DIY Network participated in a live virtual project training session Jan. 14 with a third grade class at JE Ober Elementary School in Garrett. The collaboration occurred through a unique relationship the Career Development Program at Garrett High School has with Construction Education Foundation of Georgia and Home Depot. Grace • Grace College has named Laurie Owen the permanent vice president of academic affairs. She served in the role on an interim basis for a year. Owen has nearly 20 years of experience at Grace, including 10 as the School of Education dean. Cheryl Bremer will permanently step into the role of School of Education dean beginning this semester.

GARRETT — The deafening sound of 18 third-graders pounding nails into wooden blocks filled Kim Harris’ third grade classroom at J.E. Ober Elementary School Thursday afternoon. The students were participating in a live, virtual training session led by DIY Network’s Kayleen McCabe. The collaboration was made possible through a relationship between the school, CEFGA (Construction Education Foundation of Georgia) Little Builders and Home Depot. During the 45-minute session, students constructed a scaled-down tool bench from pre-cut kits that included wood and nails, topped off with a decal depicting tools hanging on the bench. Each participant was provided safety glasses and a wooden-handled claw hammer before the building began. McCabe was broadcasting live from Colorado, with student intern Sophie joining in from Georgia.
