The Springfield-Greene County Health Department, along with the Office of Emergency Management have submitted a request to the state department of health for a COVID-19 Alternative Care Site.
The request in coordination with CoxHealth, Mercy, and Jordan Valley Community Health Center is in response to rising COVID-19 cases in the area.
More than 60 patients are on ventilators according to the latest numbers and the increase is projected to outpace hospital capacity.

Whatever happened with the COVID-19 Alternate Care Site built at Cal Poly’s Recreation Center? It was initially created to cover possible over-flow from hospitals at the beginning of the pandemic. It was never used. Now with declining coronavirus numbers and vaccinations on the rise, officials say the 165-bed facility will be dismantled and returned to a student-use space.

County of San Luis Obispo officials announced more promising news for SLO County this week – efforts are underway to demobilize and dismantle the COVID-19 Alternate Care Site (ACS) at Cal Poly. The site will soon be returned to Cal Poly for use as an on-campus recreation center.
“We hoped we would never have to use the ACS but were prepared for the worst,” said Wade Horton, County Administrative Officer, and Emergency Services Director. “It’s a relief to say that we no longer need an ACS for our community and that, even during the surge in COVID-19 cases here this past winter, our hospitals were able to provide the quality care our community members needed.”
Experts and community groups in Texas say Black and Hispanic neighborhoods have been hit hardest by power outages resulting from the winter storm that brought near-record snow totals to the area, and left nearly 4 million people without power across the state.
“Whether it’s flooding from severe weather events like hurricanes or it’s something like this severe cold, the history of our response to disasters is that these communities are hit first and have to suffer the longest,” said Robert Bullard, a professor at Texas Southern University.
