Reading festival. Here is alonso an the personal life and political career of fdr. Thank you to the roosevelt reading festival for 2016. Some of you have been here and i want to welcome you for what should be a wonderful lecture. This is a program that franklin and elenor wanted to have, a discussion and for people to visit the location because to understand Franklin Roosevelt you have to come to high park. It influenced him in so many ways. The festival has been going on for years and an opportunity to bring authors from all over the country and create an opportunity for people to hear these stories and for the researchers who have come here and spent time in our library to come back and share their work with the public. Alonso hamby, one of the great experts on both truman and roosevelt. The distinguished professor at ohio university. Hes written a number of books beyond the new deal, the american libbal rism. Man of the people. Life of harry truman and for the survival of democracy.
As well, so, this is quite literally the moment that they have been waiting for. It is such a momentous point in their lives. Something they will be telling their families about, their children, their grandchildren. Really, a very spiritual, exciting and important moment for all of these children here. There are about 250 supposed to be gathered outside. That was the idea. Looks like the crowd may be larger than that. And there will be a number of kids as we mentioned inside. There ar 24 of these, six of each of four schools in the catholic arch die in harlem. The school, our lady queen of angle ls, has about 282 students one of six in harlem operated by the arch. More than half the kids are on scholarship. Which is one of the issues facing the Catholic Church and schools right now because theyve had some difficulty keeping schools open. A lot of schools have been closed over the past number of years. And thats one of the reasons why hes there. They wanted him to focus on that as well.

He started life over again doing that Magazine Program at the university of california berkeleys journalism school. We had students who were a new generation of journalists to come to our house all the time. It was a wonderful period. Twice when he came back to new york and had to retire, his body began to slow down, as this is toward the end. I was ruminating. This was the smallest kitchen of the many kitchens of my life. It was unusually hot for june. Standing on top of the refrigerator has to be small silicon steel the ceiling. I was telling a story with mushrooms because the chinese speak highly of boosting the immune system. I still cant give up. Could he have left already . Once the hospital bed was dated at our apartment everything changed. We no longer sleep beside each other. We occupied different rooms. He sleep
