With pigtails is still on my dresser. I was confirmed and attended ccd and still have the ccd books. But as i watch today, i heard priests and others who know pope francis describe him as humble and open to new ideas. And in part, they said that because of the name he has chosen, francis, no other pope has done that. He could have chosen the name for Saint Francis of xavier, one of the first jess wits, but i like to think he chose in honor of assisi, a man who is humble and loves animals. It should be noted assisi was never ordained as a priest. Saint francis claimed that the voice of god came to him and ordered him to rebuild the church. And when i visited assisi, a town in italy, it was a spiritual experience. But i do not practice now. I am ecumenical, and im not alone. Many people i know who were raised catholic no longer attend mass and many arent raising their children catholic either whether because of the sex scandal, the views on women or homosexuality. The Catholic Church has

A short time ago, stepped on to the balcony, begins day one of his papacy as a true pioneer in many ways. The first latin american pope, the first noneuropean pope in modern times. First to take the name francis after Saint Francis of assisi. This one made history quickly, as well. Extraordinary scene in the square. The five rounds of voting, a decision. And as the white smoke rose, the crowd in st. Peters square erupted. The joy. This time, not tempered by mourning as it was eight years ago, because for the first time in 598 years, the previous pope is alive and well, retired, not deceased. As word got out, the crowd grew larger. People literally running to the square, romans and visitors, even people making airline connections, racing to the square. More than 150,000 in all, officials say. All eyes on that small balcony, waiting, watching, w

This is the second day of the conclave. 115 cardinals holding another vote right now in an effort to select a new pope. They will vote twice this morning before the session ends later this morning. Lauren green joins us live outside of saint Peters Square with the very latest. It is incredibly exciting even though it is raining out here in rome people are standing outside of the square waiting to see if there will be white or black smoke coming out of the small chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel. If there was a conclusive vote for the first vote which would be around now or so we could see white smoke. Thats what everybody is looking for. If there is no conclusive vote toted tal no one reaches the twothirds vote they will vote again. That one will be either white or black. You will see smoke
Marci, thank you. The Smoke Signals are about technology and also about chemistry. Katie marzullo has that part of the story including lighter moments during the wait. The News Conference lasted two hours this morning with three priests, the vatican spokesman answering questions in multiple languages. When the topic towns to the chemical makeup of the smoke it got hazy hazy. We will take a huge risk in describing the chemicals because i only received the names in italian six minutes ago. I studied the bible not chemistry. He did the best he could. The black smoke we have colored potassium, and Something Else that i dont know what it is which is very powerful, and zinc. Rather, it should be sulpher. The black Smoke Signals no pope, the white smoke means a new pope five cartridges and up to seven create a lot of smoke. It is bad for the art or the people . They left the Sistine Chapel in good health and the frescos are in perfect condition. There are cardinal whose inhale smoke on purpos
