When Mike O’Neil opened his bicycle repair shop in Muncie, Indiana, the Cardinal Greenway trail just outside its window stretched only 2 miles south of the shop.
The Great American Rail-Trail system could allow for travel across America from Washington state to Washington, D.C. without using a road, but rolling out the plan has included bumps along the way. One of the main issues is connecting existing trails to create a continuous 3,700-mile walking and biking route.
Indiana can't match Florida's year-round warm weather, South Carolina's beaches or Arizona's desert vistas. In terms of affordability, however, the Hoosier State makes a strong case as a retirement.
