Residents, businesses, and community organizations in the Village of Carbon dusted off their cowboy hats and saddles for the Carbon Lions Sports Days parade on Saturday, June 10.

Increased lot sales to spell beautification for Village of Carbon

The Village of Carbon has seen increased lot sales in the Diamond Estates subdivision on the village’s eastern boundaries due to a change to the land use bylaw in August 2020 which now allows modular and manufactured homes. With the bylaw change drawing renewed interest and an increase in lot sales, council has been hard at work strategizing how to further attract new residents to the quaint village in the valley through beautification projects. “This is a great opportunity for the village,” Carbon Mayor Bryan Peever told the Mail. “As more and more people are able to work remotely, we want to attract potential new buyers to our village.”

Area municipalities receive funding to offset COVID costs

A total of $436 million in funding, from both the provincial and federal governments, will be shared among Alberta’s municipalities to offset additional costs incurred due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Funds for the Municipal Operating Support Transfer (MOST) grant are allocated based on each municipality’s population, and many surrounding communities are planning how these funds will be used. “Right now, all the (Village of Delia’s) equipment is old and mostly obsolete,” Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Tracy Breese told the Mail. “Our council chamber is small, and we are only able to hold six people as per COVID regulations, so we will have to turn people away that may want to attend the meetings.”
