DOST launches 9 new AI-driven research projects Share on email From applications in agriculture to the education sector, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) launched on Thursday, April 8, nine new research projects on artificial intelligence (AI). DOST secretary Fortunato dela Pena (top left) leading the virtual launch In a virtual launch, the DOST’s Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) unveiled the AI projects to be undertaken by the DOST-Advanced Technology Science Institute (ASTI), University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), and Caraga State University (CarSU).

(MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) The DOST-PCIEERD said the projects will be undertaken by the DOST-Advanced Technology Science Institute (ASTI), and four universities, which include University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin), De La Salle University (DLSU), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), and Caraga State University (CarSU). “AI is one of our priority areas as it truly can boost the country and usher us to the fourth industrial revolution. As a powerful agent for good, AI can disrupt traditional processes and provide solutions and opportunities that Filipinos can maximize,” said DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico C. Parinigit. The nine AI projects are the following: 

8 Filipino women chosen for Australian agricultural R&D fellowship awards

Published April 2, 2021, 10:37 AM Eight outstanding Filipino women in the field of agricultural research and development have been awarded the prestigious Meryl Williams Fellowship by the Australian government through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).  Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven Robinson AO made the announcement, citing the awardees’ “demonstrated capacity for leadership and innovation, their research excellence, and their commitment to agricultural development”. “The Australian Government is at the forefront of efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Meryl Williams Fellowship is one of these efforts, focusing on supporting women who are steering transformational changes in agricultural research,” Robinson said in a statement on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. 

IPOPHL urges academe partners to drive IP filings recovery

TAGUIG CITY, March 13   As intellectual property (IP) filings dropped in 2020 amid COVID-19 challenges, the IP Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) recently held a dialogue with partners in the academe, urging them to fuel the recovery of filings by focusing this year on commercializing fresh innovations. In its KaIPhan with Innovation and Technology Support Offices (ITSOs) last month, IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba and Documentation, Information and Technology Transfer Bureau (DITTB) Director Mary Grace Cruz-Yap opened the floor for ITSOs to raise concerns on processes that need to be addressed so as to hasten turnaround times in registration. Barba assured that IPOPHL has continuous efforts to streamline its processes.
