levels of security for people like me who report outside downing street to go there. over the years, there has been a significant ramping up of security, and at least after an attack a few years ago at the front gates of parliamentjust down the road from me at whitehall about 50 metres from where we are just now, that attack on someone drove there and made it into the front garden, new palace yard of the palace of westminster, so it s definitely right to say that over the last few years, there has been a significant ramping up of the security presence around parliament, which would mean that the police had thought about the possibility of a situation like this with a car driving towards downing street, as we have seen in those images that we brought you a few minutes ago. nevertheless, i can t remember seeing one get through that first security level before and into those front gates of downing street. downing street. nick, stay there, but for peeple downing street. nick,
exactly what went on here. we have seen the video of the car veering into the gate, but we don t know any more than that. i was pausing briefly there because police are just telling us that they are not opening the street at the moment, so they are keeping this part of whitehall closed. but as we have been saying over the past 40 minutes or so, while we have been rolling with this story, there was a really heavy police presence when i got here about 40 minutes ago, a lot further away and the police cordon. we ve been moved a lot further forward. you can see where only about ten metres or so, 20 metres from the car. and most of the police have gone. it does appear that this is more about evidence gathering now than a security situation on and it also looks to me, looking further up the road that staff are being allowed to leave their offices tail. you take us through the sequence of events, and i will remind you is in
