i just remember, like, she s dead, she s dead! and everyone was like, who s dead? and i said, mollie. over the next few days, neighbors here began asking the same question who had pulled the trigger, and why? finding those answers fell to portland, texas, police detective roland chavez. mollie can t give us any information and kristene s in the hospital and she can t give us any information. at that point, it s not even clear whether kristene s going to survive, right. tips were coming in. someone said they saw a white car speeding from the park the night of the shootings. that led nowhere, so chavez and his team focused on the crime scene. there was no murder weapon. they did find two spe spent. 45-caliber casings. and near an observation deck just 30 feet away from where mollie and kristene were discovered, police found an empty monster energy drink can and five cigarette butts. and the girls didn t smoke? the girls did not smoke. chavez sent all that for dna test
we re all shells of people walking around. the happiness in our life is been taken from us. they were high school sweethearts rearing five, strapping sons. it was a rowdy house, and our parents loved it. then that terrible night. she s got blood everywhere. everywhere. a mother murdered. but as shock set in, leads poured in. witnesses reported strangers lurking. a car speeding through the neighborhood. and there were footprints out behind the house. i m putting alarms on every door because somebody is out there. but detectives, they decided the killer wasn t out there, but inside the house. now, with one of their own under arrest, the family was furious. you see these people, this is love. this is belief. in this human being. please listen to us. then investigators rush to judgment.
there is a little trail that led out to a canal area. the first patrolman on the scene told him that he had seen a car speeding away, as he raced towards the duenas house. neighbors reported seeing two strangers by that evening, and here, in this crime scene video taken the next day, a screen on the video in karen s bedroom, that looked suspiciously like it had been cut open. had intruders entered here? was anything disturbed around the house? no, the bedroom was pretty much intact. drawers were not taken open, like somebody had burglarized place. also, even though the screen appeared to be cut, it did not look like anybody had actually gone in that way. so, the detective had some questions for the only man who had been known to be in the house all evening, the husband. mark duenas.
